At Loves Classic Corgis, we believe that dogs thrive on a raw diet. They stay leaner, stronger, and healthier along with a beautiful shiny coat. I didn’t always feed raw food but one of my corgis passed away from cancer way too young and I went down the rabbit hole while researching. I found out that dogs (like people) are given food that they aren’t meant to thrive on and are exposed to too many toxins, including flea, tick and heart worm prevention.
I recommend feeding a 100% raw diet, a good company to choose from is Texas Tripe. They have prepackaged ready to feed blends that make raw feeding a breeze. I recommend feeding the puppy blend for at least year then you can rotate different flavors to see what your dog loves. Raw feeding is also affordable compared to other high quality dog food. The puppy mix is called beginners blend and will be about $55 a month. After they are off the puppy mix there are cheaper blends to choose from that they offer. Puppies will eat approximately.5-.75 a pound every day and will continue that feed ration through adulthood. They are fed 10% of their body weight as puppies then 2-3% of their body weight as adults. I also recommend adding a high quality salmon oil when you aren’t feeding the puppy blend, just make sure it’s 100% salmon oil.
There are many all natural products on the market that prevent flea, tick and heart worms. Springtime Inc offers garlic granules that offer 24 hour prevention and can be added to their food. There are also other all natural products to consider. You can reach out to me to help you find one that works for you. It is also your choice if you decide to use conventional prevention! Totally up to you!
Your puppy will be dewormed at 3 weeks, then again at 6 weeks. At 7 weeks old a fecal will be preformed at the vet to make sure they are worm free. At the 7 week appointment your puppy will receive a health vet check along with their first round of vaccinations. After that I recommend doing a fecal at each vet appointment to make sure they don’t have worms. As far as vaccinations, it’s up to you if you decide to continue them, the state of Texas only requires a rabies vaccine. Personally I give all my puppies their vaccines, then again at a year old and then every three years I do a titer test and vaccinate accordingly after that.
So many safe treat options! I recommend Himalayan cheese bones and freeze dried liver treats. Both available almost anywhere. Chicken feet are also a great option!
